Two judges from Failte Ireland just visited the Aqua Dome as Tralee qualified in the top 10 for best Tourism Town in Ireland. Tralee is in competition with Kilkenny, Drogheda, Ennis and Letterkenny in the large town category. If Tralee wins this prestigious award it will be a fantastic achievement for the town. We have a great town in Tralee with excellent attractions and amenities to visit but it is the warmth and friendliness of the people that are the real asset. Well done to Tralee Chamber Alliance for their submission for this award and to John Drummy and everyone else in Tralee for all their effort in securing Tralee in the top 10 for Tourism Towns award. Aqua Dome Strives to be a Litter Free Facility

Well done to Tralee Tidy Towns committee in conjunction with Tralee Chamber Alliance for receiving a Special Tourism Towns Award in the recent SuperValu Tidy Towns competition 2013. Staff at the Aqua Dome were delighted to hear of this award as litter awareness is a high priority in the Aqua Dome! A litter pick is done every morning in the Aqua Dome car park and a pool litter pick is performed every day. The Aqua Dome is constantly striving to be a little free facility!

Tralee is fast becoming a litter free town and that is thanks to everyone who supports and works hard at maintaining a litter free environment.

Tralee Tidy Towns continues to do trojan work on a weekly basis  in conjunction with Tralee Chamber Alliance and an army of volunteers from local businesses, private individuals and the international community as they do a clean-up of the town centre every Thursday evening. They have been joined recently by a group of young people from the Irish Red Cross whose efforts have given an added impetus to the team.

Well done all you volunteers and keep up the good work.

Rose of Tralee Skyfest Air Display

Back for its fourth year, the Rose of Tralee SkyFest Air Display will once again take place in the heart of Tralee, at the Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre on Sunday 18th August at 4pm.

Two of Ireland's leading aerobatic pilots Eddie Goggins and Gerry Humphreys have teamed up together this year to offer a duo display. Eddie came third in the World Advanced Aerobatic Championships in 2007 and Gerry Humphreys is several times National Aerobatic champion.

The world renowned SWIP team from the UK are another aerobatic duo team. Flown by Guy Westgate a 747 pilot with British Airways and expert pilot Peter Wells, this team will will put your heart in your mouth!

Lifeguards are not Babysitters

Here's an interesting article which not only applies to Beach Lifeguards but all Pool Lifguards.

Parents must understand that their Children must be supervised at all times and they are responsible for them.

Parents have been warned to stop treating lifeguards in Galway as babysitters – many leave their children near rescue huts on beaches while they go on errands, which could distract them from saving lives on the water.

“I have spoken to lifeguards – people leaving their children (beside the huts) is a problem, “They continue to leave their children close to the lifeguard huts while they go to get sandwiches from the car, or money from the ATM, or buy ice cream – it is not a babysitting service, lifeguards are there to effect a rescue and to prevent accidents.”

Irish Water Safety also says that the 25 lost children who were returned to their parents and guardians on Galway’s beaches during the month of July equates to as many tragedies that could have happened. Mr Sweeney said that last month’s heat wave brought many people onto the beaches for the first time this year; people who were, unfortunately, unprepared for the hazards that water can bring. “When the weather is warm, people forget that there are hazards,” he says. “For most people in Galway, July was their first open water swim of the year. They should recognise that there are risks specific to water.

“In Galway, there were 25 children unsupervised close to the water – it’s one thing having them playing in the garden at home, but accidents happen very fast in water. It can happen in seconds, and in a few inches of water.” There were also over 30 rescues by lifeguards from the water, and 191 accidents prevented. “In these cases, the lifeguard interjected before they got to a stage where a rescue had to happen,” Mr Sweeney added.

“There were 33 rescues where the lifeguard got involved – that’s 33 more lives that could have been lost. Ideally, the lifeguard should not be getting into a situation where they get into the water.”

SIMPLE GUIDELINES TO A SAVE AND ENJOYABLE VISIT TO THE AQUA DOME

• ALL CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 8 MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT NO MORE THAN 2 UNDER 8'S TO ONE ADULT, THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT RULE , CHILDREN MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO WANDER OFF ON THEIR OWN AND THEY MUST WEAR ARMBANDS , THE AQUADOME IS NOT A NORMAL POOL , IT HAS A RAPID RIVER, LAZY RIVER AND A WAVE MACHINE , PARENTS MUST TAKE NOTE OF ALL THESE FEATURES AND WATCH THEIR CHILDREN.

• IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO TAKE A SHOWER BEFORE ENTERING THE POOL ,NOT ONLY IS IT SANITARY BUT CAN CUT DOWN THE AMOUNT OF CHEMICALS BEING USED IN THE WATER TREATMENT

• OBEY THE LIFEGUARDS AT ALL TIMES , THE LIFEGUARDS ARE NOT THERE TO STOP YOU HAVING FUN , THEY ARE SIMPLY THERE TO KEEP YOU SAFE AND AVOID UNNECESSARY ACCIDENTS.

• ALWAYS LOCK YOUR BELONGINGS AWAY IN THE LOCKERS PROVIDED, DO NOT LEAVE ANY VALUABLES IN VIEW , LOCK THEM AWAY 

• SWIMMERS SHOULD BE AWARE OF THE DEPTH OF THE WATER AND SHOULD KEEP WITHIN A COMFORTABLE DEPTH.

• WATER SLIDES ARE A LOT OF FUN BUT WHEN USED INCORRECTLY THEY CAN RESULT IN SOME UNNECESSARY INCIDENTS. ALWAYS RIDE WATER SLIDES FEET FIRST AND ONE PERSON AT THE TIME , THE AQUADOME FLUME SLIDE IS EQUIPPED WITH A MONITOR AND TRAFFIC LIGHTS , THE PERSON AT THE TOP CAN SEE THE PERSON RIDING THE SLIDE LANDING AND EXITING THE BOTTOM BEFORE THEY CAN GO , THE LIGHTS WILL TURN GREEN AND IT IS SAFE TO PROCEED

• AS WITH ALL WATER PARKS RUNNING IS NOT ALLOWED , WET FEET AND TILES DO NOT MIX SO PLEASE WALK AROUND THE POOL DECK 

• DIVING IS ALSO DANGEROUS AS THE WATER LEVEL IS TOO SHALLOW

SWIMMING POOLS ARE A GREAT PLACE TO RELAX AND HAVE FUN, IF YOU PAY ATTENTION TO THE SIMPLE RULES YOU CAN HAVE A SAFE AND ENJOYABLE VISIT TO ANY POOL YOU VISIT, REMEMBER SAFETY IS VERY IMPORTANT!
